At the entrance to the River Dart this fortification, officially known as Dartmouth Point Battery, was vital in defending the river and its commercial port and harbour. It was built in just over a year 1860-61, faced with granite for five guns, two on the upper battery and three within its lower casemates. In 1890 all of its guns were 64pr. R.M.L.s.
It is now owned and maintained by English Heritage and is open to the public.
